After we offered our thanks and enjoyed a great meal on Thanksgiving and did some (online and/or socially distanced) shopping on Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, today it’s time to give back: Giving Tuesday. All of these traditions have looked different this year just like everything else, but nonprofits and charitable organizations still need your support — perhaps more than ever.

Throughout the pandemic, we’ve seen heartwarming stories of meat and poultry companies stepping up to the plate to support their communities through donations of protein or funds to food banks and other initiatives helping to fight hunger. Those efforts are sorely needed, with food insecurity dramatically increasing. In 2019 (before the pandemic began), 10.5% of U.S. households were food insecure at some point during the year. This summer, that number was up to nearly 20%. I’m proud of how the food chain has responded to the challenges of 2020 and gone above and beyond to keep the supply chain flowing and combat that staggering statistic.

In a similar vein, Giving Tuesday is an opportunity for us to do something positive in a year that’s been a little light on the good news. It’s a time to unite for a worldwide celebration of generosity and give our voice, time and money to support causes we’re passionate about. Here are a few you might consider supporting today.

Feeding America. Every $1 you donate helps Feeding America provide at least 10 meals to families in need.
American Humane. American Humane is an animal welfare organization you can feel good about supporting, as they support farmers and modern animal agriculture. Gifts are currently being doubled so they go even further.
Local charities. It’s always meaningful to support organizations right in your own backyard. If you want to fight hunger, local food banks would appreciate your support. If you’re passionate about helping homeless pets, your donation would really help your local humane society or animal shelter.
IFEEDER. The Institute for Feed Education and research serves as a champion for the animal food industry, a key part of meat and poultry production. With your support, IFEEDER can conduct critical animal feed research and publicize the industry's positive affect on safe and sustainable food.
