Monitoring animal rights activism is an unfortunate but necessary part of the Animal Agriculture Alliance’s mission to safeguard the future of animal agriculture. When there is a fervent, aggressive and strategic movement to end your industry (no matter how small in number it actually is), someone has to keep an eye on them. While it can be frustrating and probably not great for our blood pressure, we’re glad to play that role so you can focus on what’s truly important — the critical business of feeding people.

As part of that work, we just released a report from the 2021 Farmed Animal Conference E-Summit to our members. This virtual animal rights conference has been hosted by activist group Animal Place for the past two years in place of the Animal Rights National Conference (canceled due to COVID-19 concerns). Earlier this summer, we also put together summaries for members of PETA’s “Not Your Usual Animal Rights Conference” and the Rancher Advocacy Project’s July Summit.

I’d like to take the opportunity to share some of the key quotes from these reports:

“We must challenge the ridiculous notion of human supremacy. All we are is different, and the differences never, ever justify the prejudice.”
“We are opposed to any exploitation of animals. Not just bigger cages, no cages. Not just less domination but no dominating. Not just making sure they are anesthetized before being killed for a shoe or a steak but not being killed for either.”
“Every morsel of meat we eat is slapping the tear-stained face of a hungry child.”
“There’s simply no such thing as humane meat, dairy and egg production. Don’t be misled by quaint farm names and claims.”
“When you buy from animal agriculture, you’re supporting environmental racism.”
“Push the envelope wherever we are to confront what is destroying our planet.”
“The only humane choice is vegan.”

These are just a handful of the statements made at these events that illustrate activist groups’ opposition to all animal agriculture — no matter what animal welfare standards are in place — and how they will employ a wide array of tactics to attempt to achieve their goals.
