It’s August. Time for all social media to be bombarded with the first day of schools pics for our kids. I’ve been doing a first day picture of myself for years. Why? Because even though I’m not in the K-12 or college age range anymore (according to the calendar), I am still in the continuous learning process. I am in “school” everyday. This may sound strange since I am an educator at heart, but in order to educate we have to learn first. And learning doesn’t stop at 12th grade or after college.

I’m starting my 25th year in the poultry industry. My expertise is poultry meat quality and food safety. I’m so excited to start this “school” year, and I have so many great things planned. My school is life and my teacher is God, along with each person I am able to encounter along this journey of life. I never waste an opportunity to meet someone new and learn a lesson or interesting fact of life.

When I grow up, I want to be a productive citizen and agricultural advocate for our poultry industry. I want to lead with love, kindness and compassion while using my strengths to inspire empower and educate men and women to find their voice in life and be their authentic selves within this industry.

My favorite things are laughing, reading, enjoying everything outdoors (hiking, biking, paddleboarding, swimming, yoga) and just enjoying family, including my dogs. My favorite quote is “Strive not to be a success but rather strive to be of value” - Albert Einstein. Best life lesson so far is understanding what I need through life:

Celebrate August by getting to know your employees' first day at the “school” of life. We can all learn from each other and be better humans to each other. Pack something special for lunch (Little Debbie snacks for me!) and write yourself an inspirational note. I hope y’all enjoy your first day.
