These numbers are all meaningful to me. “93” represents 1993, which is the year I graduated from Texas A&M (Fighting Texas Aggie Class of 1993 — whoop!). I graduated in Biomedical Science and immediately jumped into Food Science within the Department of Poultry Science. It was the best decision I made in college. Poultry Science was a great fit for me and y’all know I am a die-hard Texas Aggie poultry scientist who bleeds maroon.

“25” is the number of years I have been involved with or in the poultry industry. This industry has my heart. I love learning about poultry (chickens, turkeys and eggs), educating, trouble shooting, and just being around poultry peeps. We are a fabulous flock of people.

“1” is the number of days I have to make a difference in the lives of others. I do this by choosing to take one day at a time and striving to be of value. Every day is a new day to do something special and different.

One of my favorite quotes is from Albert Einstein, who said, “Do not try to become a man (person) of success but try to become a man (person) of value.” A successful person of value will always give more than they receive.

How can we be successful? How can we make sure we are giving more than we receive? This may seem challenging, especially in today’s world. Just this week (and by the way, it is only Wednesday as I write this), I have had three personal drama moments and two work drama moments. Hard to handle? Yes! Lots of drama for just a Wednesday.

Staying focused on “value” with all these roadblocks requires curiosity — one simple word that has a huge role to play in success. Curiosity exists for a reason: To keep us in the state of awe.

Each of us can be curious. We can all contemplate new ways of doing things and we can all question the way things are done. We do it every day at work. But, sometimes, we forget to apply this curiosity toward people, which could help us empathize with their struggles, struggles which may impact their actions and behaviors toward us. For some this task is innate, and these people are known as empaths. For others, it is more of a struggle.

We should make more of an effort to be curious with our fellow poultry peeps and use our curiosity to be more understanding. If we were to apply this concept of curiosity among our peers and friends, we then become more of value to each other. This value, in itself, allows us to take the title of “successful.”

One last thought: It is also important to shine that curiosity light onto ourselves each day as we learn why we are struggling and why we may be having “one of those days.” By shining this curiosity onto ourselves, we gain insight and grow personally and professionally.

“1” is the number of days we have to make a difference in the lives of our poultry peeps, our friends, and ourselves. One day at a time.
