As I wind down ten years of blogging for Meatingplace, I want to get a few things off my chest, even if most are redundant. Call them pet peeves, call them biased opinions, call them anything you want, but:

Why the push by Gen Z and millennials for everything organic? I am 71, in good health, and been eating conventional all my life.

What is the intrigue of non-GMO? Do the buyers of that product think using a prize bull to inseminate heifers is not producing a GMO?

Why intentionally and knowingly poison children by feeding them raw milk? You don’t feed kids cigarettes and booze so why raw milk? Contaminated milk used to be one of the, if not THE, most common causes of children’s deaths from foodborne illnesses until we discovered pasteurization.

Same goes for not getting life-saving vaccinations. Not only does one endanger their own children, but all their playmates and classmates because no vaccines are guaranteed to produce 100 percent immunity every time. Polio, Diphtheria, Rubella, Pertussis etc. all used to kill kids. Parents worried relentlessly. Now parents who grew up spoiled without those fears regress to the bad old days.

Why order a hamburger medium rare?

Why listen to ABC and refuse, after twenty years of doing the opposite, to buy ground beef that contains lean finely textured beef? Which, BTW, can now be called ground beef according to USDA/FSIS.
Why not declare certain pathogenic strains of Salmonella to be an adulterant in meat products?

How did we ever survive the 20^th century without everything being labeled “gluten free”? Did we really suddenly produce hundreds of thousands of kids with Celiac disease?

Why do we allow Chinese-produced antibiotics to be sold in this country, but not Chinese raised cooked chicken?

Can we please find a way to produce Salmonella-free eggs? I want to dip my toast in the runny yolk. (Actually I do dip my toast; this is one risk I have to assume to be happy on Sunday mornings.)

And finally, why did God have to invent a disease called Multiple Sclerosis? My daughter lives with MS and gets an infusion every six months that knocks the heck out of her immune system to keep it from erroneously attacking her myelin that coats her brain cells and nerve cells. When that immune system is compromised it also makes her much more susceptible to infections from Salmonella contaminated food and also from those non-immunized kids that she works with in her pre-school setting.

There, I’ve gone and done it. I’ve used my next to last blog for Meatingplace to vent and stir the pot, and, if Janie Gabbett allows it, to blatantly solicit donations for my daughter’s annual MS Walk team called Brooke’s Believers. We have raised over $195,000 in 9 years of Walk MS to try and help keep people walking who live with MS through Society funded research. Thank you for reading my blogs all these years and, hopefully, for helping us find a cure for MS.

We wiped out Smallpox, and have almost wiped out polio. We can wipe out MS.
