My name is Len Steiner, and I have been in various parts of the food industry for over 40 years and associated with the DLR (CME Daily Livestock Report) since it started in 2001. My family has been in various areas of the food business literally since my grandfathers got off the boats over 100 years ago.

The idea in our family for the last three generations has been that it is appropriate to give back to your community, business and others and share some of the success we have been lucky enough to have obtained.

I can remember being in the meat cooler looking at hog heads hanging on a hook when I was about 5 years old. I often tell people that when I got out of grade school, I started working and had two jobs: I washed the pans in the bakery; and I washed the garbage cans in the meat department. I mostly stuck with the meat department, and it is lucky I did, because I loved those hot rolls right out of the deep fryer, and if I had stayed in the bakery, I know I would have weighed 350 pounds and been dead several years ago. Apart from a short time when I was designing food processing plants as an engineer, I spent most of my life producing, buying, selling, planning and designing various food products, mostly meat but also bakery and other food items. My car’s license plate is “MEATS”; it tends to keep vegans away.

Some time ago, my granddaughter asked me, “Exactly what do you do for a living?”

That question got me thinking, and eventually I decided to write a small book that partially answered her question, but it also contains information that I wish I would have had at 20 or 25 years of age when I was getting started.

So, today I would like to offer the e-version of the book to people in the food business for FREE.

My offer of a free book is simply a good will gesture to help younger people. If it also ends up with some additional business for my company, that would be nice. But, at my age, I think giving back is probably more important than doing more business.
