JBS USA is preparing to launch a collaboration that is expected to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at several of its beef and poultry processing plants while producing renewable natural gas (RNG) supplies.

The Greeley, Colo.-based processor aims to address emissions at its facilities to repurpose waste streams into renewable energy with a goal of meeting the twin challenges of food security and addressing climate change impacts, JBS said in a news release. The program with GreenGasUSA is expected to convert GHG emissions into RNG at JBS facilities in Grand Island, Neb., Hyrum, Utah, and the Pilgrim’s Pride facility in Sumter, S.C. All of the installations are expected to be completed by the end of 2025 and will use existing energy pipelines to displace the GHG emissions equivalent of 60 million miles driven by a car or 26 million pounds of coal burned each year, the release said.

The new GHG partnership follows the more than 25 global projects launched by JBS since 2019 designed to eliminate — or capture and destroy — methane emissions from organic waste lagoons at JBS facilities. Those programs convert anaerobic systems to aerobic systems that end methane emissions, using captured biogas to generate renewable electricity and producing RNG for pipeline distribution, according to the JBS release.
