If you haven’t seen the stories coming out about the Dutch farmer protests in the Netherlands, a quick online search will reveal a variety of news outlets that are covering the protests.

The farmers there are being unfairly targeted with heavy-handed environmental regulations.

According to Reuters, “The Netherlands is the world's second-largest agricultural exporter after the United States. Relatively large numbers of livestock and heavy use of fertilizers, as well as traffic and construction in a densely populated country, have led to illegally high levels of nitrogen oxides in the air and water.”

Apparently, if you work in a super-productive ag industry that helps to feed a hungry world, the current reward system in the Netherlands is to be crushed under the weight of unbearable government regulations – all in the name of protecting the environment.

Last month the Dutch government passed a law to reduce nitrogen oxide and ammonia emissions a full 50% in the next 8 years, estimating that livestock numbers will need to be reduced by 30%. Even though the government admits that this will completely bankrupt approximately a third of the nation’s farms, by calling this legislation a climatologically “unavoidable transition,” they’re attempting to shift the blame for its negative fallout onto the farmers themselves. Farms are literally being ‘cancelled’ out of existence. Sadly, some Dutch farmers are giving up and some are even resorting to suicide as a desperate last resort means of protest.

Farm and agriculture organizations have reported that the government targets are not realistic or reasonable and have called for a protest in the Hague on June 22. The defensive reaction from the ag industry is quickly spreading. Four hundred tractors were used to spell out a message that could be read from the sky, “HELP! NO FARMERS, NO FOOD!” In many places farmers have formed huge tractor convoys and, in some cases, have even resorted to spraying manure onto government buildings in protest.

Dutch law enforcement, in a despicable display of potentially lethal force, have even fired live bullets at the protesting Farmers. Consequently, the blowback has become so intense that protests are now spreading to farmers in Italy, Germany and Poland.

We’ll have to see how this expanding standoff between the government’s climate agenda versus the agricultural interests can result in a plan that reduces the environmental impacts of food production while at the same time allowing farmers to stay in business. Something’s definitely gotta’ give, and my bet is that particularly the smaller farmers will turn out to be the losers in this battle with the dominant government Goliath.

It does not seem at all wise to exasperate and punish farmers who are so essential to sustaining life itself, but that’s what’s happening, as is encapsulated in this ‘rural dictionary’ definition:

FARMING, noun: [far-ming] The art of losing money while working 400 hours a month to feed ungrateful people who have been convinced that you are trying to kill them.

Just why are government regulators biting the hands that feed the people?

I believe the answer to this question is that to radical environmental globalists, farmers and ranchers represent a grave threat to their ever-growing populist agenda that other industries do not.

Farmers and ranchers are the true environmental stewards of the land. Many are multi-generational operations, with deep histories and roots to the land they love, were born on, work on, live on and will die on.

Dutch politician Thierry Baudet recently said, “Dutch farmers are fighting the globalist Great Reset agenda through their protests against aggressive new government climate policies.

The real point here is the Great Reset, mass migration, [and] transnational governance. And that’s why the people have to become atomized—they have to lose their connection with the land. And that’s why they’re hitting the farmers.”

Stripping farmers from their almost spiritual connection to the land won’t be easy.

The Dutch farmers recognize there is strength in numbers. They’re fighting for the future of their multi-generational family farms and the future of food. But will they prevail?
