Anyone who has had to go through the process of finding a job knows it sucks. Anyone who has had to go through the process of hiring for an open position knows it sucks, too.

There’s the position itself, as it’s been known. Then there’s the position, as it could be, and all the internal back-and-forth about how it should be structured and described. Then there’s the skills required, and which to prioritize for a better likelihood of succeeding in the position’s mission. And wait, what again is the mission?

The internet gives us various tools to use in order to gather and parse out different candidates, but it’s a double-edged sword. Rather, it can be like a firehose, where you’re drowning in resumes that, by and large, just don’t match up to what you’re looking for. And many times, when the resume does line up, the person is only good on paper.

And sometimes, you go through a lengthy process of talking to a person who fits the bill, but those talks fizzle for a variety of reasons, and you feel not only disappointed, but also jilted by what feels like a major waste of time.

But, of course, that’s just one way of looking at it.

Even in those moments, going through what can be a painstaking process, you’re learning more about your process. You’re learning more about the skills you value more than others, and you’re learning more about the type of people you want on your team. That has value.

And when you find someone with all the skills you need, you feel the effort is worth it. When that person with all the skills you need also has the personality, characteristics and traits that you value, you feel it’s more than worth it.

All the skills under the sun don’t matter if, ultimately, the potential hire isn’t a good person. Period. Spending that much time with someone who is a master at their craft – even helping you make more money – won’t be sustainable for the long run, if that person doesn’t make you want to come to work every day.

It’s tough to be shorthanded. But if you believe in what you’re doing, and you believe in the goals you’re trying to achieve, it’s worth the extra effort to find not just the right worker, but the right person.

That way, the road to success is a more enjoyable one, and it has more meaning.
