I, like most of you, have been following the news about the continued spread of the Covid-19 virus with bated breath. Several of my clients have been soliciting research about early detection of the virus so they can help make their facilities safer. How can we be more proactive in identifying this virus so we can all be more protected? Our frontline industry is in the crosshairs in so many ways that this is of paramount importance.

I read a report about Sanderson Farms spending $24 million — and counting — and they certainly are not the only company out there trying to keep things safe for their employees and help fend off rising lawsuits. Certainly, strictly following the ever-changing basic guidelines as denoted by the CDC is important. But the issue brings to mind a conversation I had with an associate and old friend, who mentioned the technology offered by a US company, that was invented in Brazil. He was looking into a scanning machine that goes beyond thermal temperature reading. The machine was designed back in 2005 when SARS was running rampant throughout the world.

I wanted to learn more so I spoke with the CEO about the technology, which I'm told is installed pretty widely in South America and Europe, but seems not to be widely known in the U.S. Here’s a quick synopsis: As I understand it, this machine will detect the presence of a virus in the pre-symptomatic stage, prior to any symptoms showing but at a stage/time when the virus can be spread to many others. It screens the pre-symptomatic individuals out, in order to keep the workforce and facility virus-free, safe, healthy, up and running.

I'm not using my blog to tell you this because I'm advocating for the company or the technology in any way; for one thing, it sounds too good to be true. But the conversation itself made me think about ways that companies can, and do, go beyond the federally recommended actions to protect their employees and their company.

My question for the week is, what are you doing beyond the guidelines to protect your staff? Do you have a plan in place for contact tracing? Have you thought or actively investigated any technologies to address employee health and safety in this pandemic period?
