Bruised, a bit battered, might have blemishes, slightly deformed or maybe a small count size. Finally, there are several different companies that have popped up to deal with the ugly produce cause.

These companies are addressing food waste with a smart and simple solution: mailing 18- to 22-pound boxes filled with produce that was recently harvested. These fruits and vegetables have not quite met the grade for your local grocery store. Most Americans expect to see perfectly shaped peppers and straight cucumbers. This leaves millions of tons of fresh food available and, thanks to these companies, food pantries and other food rescue organizations, it’s not all going into a landfill.

The produce boxes that you receive are packed in eco-friendly cartons made from recycled materials. For families on a budget it’s a win win. Consumers can buy weekly wholesome fruits and vegetables, save up to 40% compared to grocery stores and help put a dent in food waste!

I wanted to see first-hand if this innovative approach was all they claimed it would be. We ordered two different boxes from two different companies. We received both boxes intact within days of placing our order. Average weights were 21 pounds, plus (to our surprise) all of the contents of both boxes were varied seasonal offerings and staples.

Additionally, all of the products were edible and usable in a multitude of dishes we prepared. Just for kicks, we took a list of the exact contents to two of our local grocery stores to do some comparative shopping. I am happy to report that both companies lived up to their marketing. The box ingredients were 36% and 38% less than if we bought the same items and weight.

The obvious downside is if you’re a little culinary challenged and like to know what you’re cooking in advance, you will not know what is going to be in the box week to week. For me, the the 40% savings is enough incentive. If it is for you, simply get on your computer or … look at one of the dust-covered cookbooks begging for attention and look for recipes that uses the boxed ingredients.
