Since I began writing the "Chef's Table" blog for Meatingplace, I have truly appreciated what a unique group we are. We are all focused on current industry events, new trends, a general appreciation of and affinity for all things protein-related and, of course, food in general.

Having made that previous statement, I am curious to hear your thoughts on a simple question: Can you identify and share a particular concern as it connects to animal welfare in all or one particular protein industry? This an open-ended question with no correct or incorrect response. I merely request your thoughts and knowledge on the issue, as I dwell on this subject often.

I think it is extremely important to be mindful of our obligation. I believe our stewardship toward animals reveals how we treat each other. This isn’t just the farmers' and ranchers' issue; it goes all the way from them to all of us as consumers, and makes many stops in between. How we think and act affects us all directly or indirectly. We all feel the ripples from that single pebble being dropped on still waters.

Stewardship is one of the most important concepts we can define. Merriam Webster says stewardship is “the conducting, supervising, or managing of something; especially the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care." Back in 1965 in the United Kingdom, a set of principles were adopted to cover the welfare of livestock. These five freedoms can easily be applied beyond animals to human beings: Freedom from hunger and thirst, from discomfort, from pain, injury or disease, to express normal behavior, from fear and distress.

The connection of these basic principles to ranchers and farmers is easy to make, but what about consumers? I suppose that connection is not as easy to see, as we all have different socio-economical situations and financial limitations that affect what and how we do things, where we reside, access to food, what we eat, how we interact and what our beliefs are.

What I think we all might agree on is something I was taught growing up: Treat all the way you would like to be treated, be it animals or humans. We all can help make the world be a better place — we all have this ability. As always, I welcome you to share your thoughts and comments.
